Acting Director Named for Scripps Oceanography

Scripps Director on Sabbatical

Prof. Catherine Constable of Scripps’ Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics is serving as the Acting Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences effective Oct. 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013.

A member of the UC San Diego faculty since 1991, Constable’s principal research interests focus on Earth’s magnetic field and its changes over a wide range of timescales. She is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the European Geophysical Union, and the Royal Astronomical Society of the United Kingdom, which awarded her its Price Medal in 1997. In 2012 she became a Research Awardee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Her many service responsibilities to the campus include chairing the recent Scripps research directions strategic planning effort and serving as Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences and Scripps Deputy Director of Research from 2009 to early 2012.

Scripps Director Tony Haymet has been taking a sabbatical and has continued his research program, accepted an excellence award as Visiting Professor of the Petersen Foundation in Kiel, Germany, (http://www.geomar.de/en/) and is chairing the World Economic Forum’s Ocean Council (http://www.weforum.org/content/global-agenda-council-oceans-2012-0). The World Economic Forum, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
