Volunteering on a Scripps ShipThe best way to volunteer to serve in a scientific party on a research cruise is to review the ship schedules at: http://shipsked.ucsd.edu/Schedules/ Identify any cruises that correspond to your interests, then contact the corresponding chief scientists. Some chief scientists welcome an additional hand and may even be willing to defray travel costs, while others are already fully booked with their regular research group personnel. The only way to find out is to contact them. The schedules generally give contact information for chief scientists, using their names as links on the schedules, to the extent such information is known. The Ship Scheduling Office (at email address: shipsked@ucsd.edu) can provide further information. If you do reach an agreement with a chief scientist to volunteer in their scientific party, be certain to get signed up as a staff volunteer through the business office of the chief scientist (if he or she is from UCSD) or equivalent process (if from another institution). The Ship Scheduling Office does not handle this transaction. Staff volunteer status will make you eligible for worker's compensation insurance in case of an injury at sea. We strongly discourage, and may refuse to embark, persons lacking suitable insurance coverage see section http://shipsked.ucsd.edu/General_Info/Chief_Scientists/Manual/Pre-Cruise_Requirements/ on "Size and Composition of the Scientific Party" and also the status form with its categories of employment, at http://shipsked.ucsd.edu/General/Forms/documentation.php, which you will need to sign prior to embarking. |
