Contracts and Grants

The SIO Office of Contract and Grant Administration (SIO OCCA) was opened in 1974. Prior to 1974, Scripps proposals and awards were processed through the UCSD Office of Contract and Grant Administration. SIO OCGA is functionally related to the Office of Contract and Grant Administration at UCSD, but reports to the SIO Deputy Director-Administration. We work with closely with the UCSD Office of Post-award Financial Services on award accounting and payment issues, and the UCSD Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services office regarding intellectual property matters. SIO OCGA represents SIO on various campus research administration committees taking part in policy decisions representing SIO s viewpoint.

SIO Office of Contract and Grant Administration is charged with the administrative liaison activities related to SIO research contracts and grants funded by federal, state, and private agencies. SIO OCGA is a service department with its primary goal being to help SIO principal investigators identify and obtain funding for their research. PI s produce proposals with their departmental business offices which prepare budgets, complete University forms, and facilitate submission of the proposal. The SIO OCGA staff reviews each proposal and budget for compliance with agency guidelines and University policy. During the pre-award phase, SIO OCGA tracks the status of proposals communicating with agency contract and grant officers and responding to agency pre-award audits of proposal budgets. When a proposal is funded, SIO OCGA negotiates, accepts and signs contracts and grants on behalf of the University. Our post-award responsibilities are to provide advice to PI s and department staff, interpret award terms and conditions, process post-award actions, and ensure compliance with reporting requirements. In FY06 SIO OCGA submitted 517 proposals and processed 524 awards. SIO awards for FY06 totaled $106,232,948. A summary of SIO's contract and grant award activity FY92/93 through FY05/06 is attached.
