Facilities

The Scripps campus is nestled along the coastal bluffs of La Jolla Shores on 170 acres, 15 miles from downtown San Diego. Other specialized facilities are located throughout the county and southern California.

The campus facilities for supporting research and teaching are the most advanced available, ranging from an extensive hydraulics laboratory with wind and wave channels to a state-of-the-art visualization center. An analytical lab has various chemical investigative instrumentation including scanning electron microscopes, spectrometers, and other high-precision devices.

Among the many computer resources is access to the San Diego Supercomputer Center as well as many supercomputer clusters throughout the institution. The Scripps Library is the University of California's major collection of marine science materials, with outstanding collections in oceanography, marine biology, and marine technology. It also specializes in atmospheric sciences, fisheries, geology, geophysics, and zoology.

The various marine life and geological specimens housed at Scripps form a vast "library" of oceanographic resources available for investigations. Two underwater research areas that are part of the UC Natural Reserve System are adjacent to the Scripps campus.

The Scripps Research Diving Program is the oldest of its type in the country. The program supplies training and support equipment for all staff, students, and faculty who require scuba diving for their research.
