Today

While knowledge itself is reason enough to explore the natural world, today our planet is experiencing the inadvertent impacts of industrialization that threaten to alter every aspect of life on Earth. Thus the task for science is to discover new information about the environment and then communicate those findings to policy makers, private industry, and the public in efforts to transform knowledge into relevant actions that have direct benefits to society.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography is uniquely positioned to contribute to this endeavor through global research, international student training, and far-reaching public education programs. Increasingly, local, state, national, and international decision makers call upon Scripps researchers to provide the scientific expertise necessary to address environmental and ecological issues.
