The Biology Section consists of approximately 45 principal investigators (with affiliated research staff, postdocs and students) distributed among three research divisions: Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD), Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine (CMBB), and Integrative Oceanography Division (IOD). Each division houses a variety of major research/educational endeavors that typically involve other parts of Scripps, UCSD and a world-wide range of collaborators.

MBRD researchers study the biochemistry, physiology, genetics, ecology and evolution of marine organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to fish and whales. CMBB programs focus on discovery and development of marine natural products for biomedical applications and also on studies of vertebrate physiology. IOD researchers include a group of coastal physical oceanographers and a group of biological oceanographers/ecologists with broad interests in physical/biological interactions.

In addition to maintaining a strong core of basic research, many Biology Section programs have an equally strong focus on meeting societal needs, ranging from development of new anti-cancer drugs to developing strategies for management of beach erosion. Each of these programs requires a unique set of infrastructure and personnel resources; keeping Scripps at the cutting edge of all these areas of research is a serious challenge.
